Daphne Board makes custom footwear that is intended to be worn frequently, maintained regularly, and repaired when necessary. She draws design inspiration from early 20th-century shoes where embellishment was exuberant, thoughtfully enhancing the look of the wearer. Daphne graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Textiles in 1998. She began making shoes in 2001 during an apprenticeship with theatrical shoemakers in Canada, establishing Daphne Board Custom Shoes in western Massachusetts. In making custom shoes, she began receiving requests for orthopedic needs, which led her to study at Eneslow Pedorthic Institute in New York in 2012, completing her training under 4th- and 5th-generation “shoe dogs” Chris Bail and Laura Bail D’onofrio and became a Certified Pedorthist in 2014. Currently, Daphne lives and works in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
