Artist Bio | John Horn of Shooting Star Press refers to himself as a craftsman. John’s initial introduction to letterpress printing was in high school in the late 1960s. He went on to work professionally as a commercial printer for many years before establishing his own print studio.
John began collecting historic printing equipment and type in the 1980s, immersing himself in the history of printing and typography through both his studio practice and collection. In addition to collecting over 200 printing presses, John owns 2,700 fonts of metal type and 1,200 fonts of wood type. He is certainly one of the leading authorities on the craft of letterpress printing and generously shares his knowledge through teaching at Penland School of Craft and other resources.
John maintains a large studio in Little Rock where he prints his wonderful cards and engages in all manner and breadth of the art of letterpress printing.
“I’ve always been a maker, even as a kid. In high school, I found printing and that has been my life’s work and a perpetual joy for me. I love letters and words and putting them together and putting them on paper in a manner that is pleasant and easy to read.”
