Past Exhibition: Artist Plate
Paper Plate, Plastic Plate, White Plate,
A collection of artist made dinner plates and related insights about food
March 20 – May 6, 2012
A fun investigation into the relationship of craftspeople and food; over sixty ceramic artists and nearly 270 interpretations of the plate form. Artists responded to a series of questions about creating dinnerware, their interest in food, and how the two intersect.
Does food influence the color choices in your work?
No. For me, why not make food that is the right color for the plate? – Susan Feagin
Do you think about a specific food when you are designing a new piece for tableware?
I think about a specific food all day long, whatever I am doing. I love to eat. – Holly Walker
Besides your own dinnerware, whose plates do you enjoy using?
Our kitchen does not contain any machine made piece of fired clay. I’m drawn to drinking my morning cappuccino in one of Robert Brady’s or Linda Christianson’s cups. The plate is probably Susan Dewsnap’s or Rick Hensley’s, the bowl Matt Kelleher’s or Wayne Branum’s, but I can’t omit those white quatrefoil bowls of Mark Pharis’….may I just send pictures of shelves laden with treasures? – Gail Kendall
