Annually Funded Scholarships at Penland School of Crafts

 

Milton Adelman HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles) Scholarship Award
Funded by Cathy and Alan Adelman in honor of her father's 90th birthday, this full scholarship is awarded and managed by HOLA. It allows a youth living in the Los Angeles area to attend a two-week summer session at Penland.

 

Lynn Kerr Azzam Memorial Scholarship
Elizabeth Aralia funds this award annually in memory of her sister, to provide a full scholarship for a summer class to a woman 50 years or older.

 

LGBTQ Scholarship Award
This two week work-study scholarship, funded annually by a friend to honor Mary Anna Box & Melvin Sidney Stanforth, is awarded based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Meta Lou Quattlebaum Bailey Scholarship
The Bailey Endowment Inc. funds this award in memory of Meta Lou Quattlebaum Bailey to provide a full scholarship for a summer session for a resident of North Carolina. Preference is given to a female student 50 years or older.

 

Bob & Peggy Culbertson Scholarship Award
Peggy and Bob Culbertson fund this award annually to provide a full scholarship for a two-week summer session based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Dana Foundation Glass Scholarship
Funded by The Charles A. Dana Foundation at the recommendation of Helene Safire, this award provides full scholarships for a summer session in glass.

 

The Dover Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Award
Funded by The Dover Foundation, Inc., this award provides a full two-week scholarship for a student in any media with financial need and exceptional talent.

 

The Theresa DuPre Scholarship Award
Funded annually by Theresa DuPre, this award provides one full scholarship for a two-week summer session for a student in clay.

 

Bettie Ann Whitehurst Everett Scholarship
Funded by Spencer and Mary Ann Everett in memory of Bettie Ann Whitehurst Everett, this award provides one partial scholarship for a student in clay.

 

Boyd & Maxine Falls Scholarship Award
Funded annually by Laurel and Chesley Falls to encourage innovation and creativity, this full scholarship for a summer class is awarded to an artist who is accomplished in one medium and pursuing a class in a different medium. The recipient will be selected for his or her artistic merit and will receive a materials stipend of $500.

 

Golden Pearl Foundation Teacher Scholarship Award
Funded annually by the Golden Pearl Foundation, this award provides three full scholarships for a summer session for North Carolina art teachers and a stipend for the purchase of materials to use in their home classrooms.

 

Shelton Gorelick Scholarship Award
This award is funded annually by Carol Gorelick in memory of Shelton Gorelick, who cared deeply about Penland. It provides one full scholarship for a summer course in clay for a student with financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Terry Jefferson & Joe Lampo Scholarship Award
Terry Jefferson and Joe Lampo fund this award to provide a full scholarship for a two-week course to a student from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock. A UALR faculty committee makes the selection. Eligible students are current juniors and seniors with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in art.

 

Carl and Marianne Larson Scholarship
Established by Peter Larson and the family and friends of Carl and Marianne Larson, this award recognizes Carl and Marianne's deep sense of community and commitment to volunteerism, Carl's life-long interest in woodworking, and Marianne's dedication to teaching. It provides an annual work-study scholarship for a summer session in wood.

 

Kurtz Family Foundation Scholarship Award
The Kurtz Family Foundation funds this award to provide a work-study scholarship for a student with financial need and exceptional talent to study hot glass for one summer session.

 

Johnson Legacy Fund for Art Scholarship
Funded by the Johnson Legacy Fund for Art held at the Winston-Salem Foundation, this award provides a work-study scholarship to support the cross training of artistic souls. Eligible applicants are currently pursing, or have completed, a higher education major in music, drama or dance, or who are performing artists (amateur or professional) in one of those fields. First award in 2017.

 

Tom and Asa Johnson Scholarship Award
Funded by Thomas P. Johnson, this fund provides full scholarships for a summer session at Penland for students with financial need. Preference will be given to students with diverse educational, cultural, and life backgrounds to support Penland’s intentionally inclusive and dynamic creative community.

 

Louisiana State University Scholarship
Funded by an alumna of Louisiana State University (LSU), this award provides a full scholarship for a summer session for a student from the LSU School of Art to enrich their education and their personal and professional network.

 

Isaac & Sonia Luski Scholarship Award
Long-time friends of Penland Isaac and Sonia Luski fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Jean McLaughlin & Tom Spleth Scholarship Award
Funded anonymously in honor of Jean McLaughlin and Tom Spleth, this full scholarship is directed to an international student for a two-week summer session.

 

The McMurray Scholarship Award
Charles McMurray funds this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session for a student in Iron.

 

Ron & Sue Meier Scholarship Award
Ron and Sue Meier fund this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a summer session in wood.

 

Mitchell High School Scholarship Award
Penland School of Crafts funds this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a summer session for a graduating senior from Mitchell High School. Work-study duties for this award are assigned in the recipient’s studio.

 

The Neely & Thompson Scholarship Award
Funded by Linda B. Neely and Mark Thompson, this award provides a full scholarship for a two-week summer session for a student in photography.

 

The Patricia Nevin Scholarship Award
To encourage older students to take risks with new media, Pat Nevin funds this award annually in support of a special work-study scholarship for a person 60 years or older without significant experience in the medium they choose to study.

 

Novak/Perkins Fiber Scholarship
Funded by Larry Novak and Dolly Perkins, this award provides a full scholarship for a summer class in textiles, books, or paper for a serious student with financial need who otherwise would not be able to attend. The recipient will also receive a $100 materials stipend.

 

O’Halloran Family Foundation Scholarship
The O’Halloran Family Foundation funds this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a student in clay.

 

Peter & Joni Petschauer, Peggy Polson Penland Scholarship
This fund supports one full scholarship for a two-week summer session at Penland. Eligible applicants are first time Penland students who are rising sophomores and juniors at Appalachian State University. Students in any degree track with prior experience in media offered at Penland are encouraged to apply.

 

Roundhouse Foundation Scholarships
The Roundhouse Foundation, which supports the arts in Sisters and central Oregon, funds this award to provide access to Penland's high quality studios and immersive retreat environment for talented artists from Central Oregon. Support is provided for tuition, room, and board, materials, travel, and an artist stipend.

 

Russell Scholarship
Funded annually by a friend of Penland, this full scholarship for a summer class in any media is awarded to an emerging artist coming into their creativity later in life. The recipient must be 50 years of age or older and demonstrate financial need and artistic talent.

 

Texas Star Scholarship
This anonymously funded award supports the experience of a concentration work-study student in clay. The award provides $2850 towards the work-study scholarship fee for a student with financial need who is ready to engage fully in concentrated creative exploration.

 

Wendy Weiner and Delia Champion Scholarship
Wendy Weiner and Delia Champion fund this award to provide a full scholarship for summer session in any studio for a student with exceptional talent and financial need.

 

Bob Weisgerber Memorial Scholarship
Friends and family fund this award in memory of Bob Weisgerber, a woodworker and a friend of Penland, to provide a full scholarship for a summer class in wood. Preference will be given to a student over 40 who would otherwise not be able to study at Penland.

 

Rob Williams and Warren Womble Scholarship Award
Rob Williams and Warren Womble fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session in printmaking for a student with exceptional talent and financial need.

 

Windgate Partial Scholarship Awards
The Windgate Foundation provides leadership support for Penland’s partial scholarship program. This gift provides 30 partial scholarships with no work-requirement to deserving students for whom a modest amount of aid makes attending Penland possible.
