Doug Sigler – Penland, NC
After graduate school at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Doug Sigler began his teaching career at Buffalo State College. He built himself a house in Orchard Park, New York, setting a pattern that he has maintained through his life– living in a Sigler house some distance from where he taught. Although he kept a place in Rochester, by the end of the ‘70s he also lived in Penland, North Carolina. He had taught at Penland and formed a bond with director Bill Brown, which compelled him to buy land nearby. In the summer of 1978, he brought a group of his woodworking students from R. I. T. to help him start building his home there.

Thereafter, he divided his time between Rochester and Penland. His wife, Kathie, stayed at Penland- a strong incentive for frequent North Carolina sojourns. Sigler has built four other homes in the Penland area, most since his retirement. His houses are remarkable for their sense of space and flow, and all contain examples of his built-in cabinetry as well as his signature in-wall toilet paper holder.

The only sense in which Doug Sigler has retired is that he no longer receives a paycheck for his teaching. He continues to teach (now in a much larger classroom), to make his own work, and to collaborate in the largest sense of the word.
