2009 Winter Studio/Housing Rental Information and Application

Based on applications received by the November 1 deadline, we have now determined which studios will be open this winter. We will continue to accept rental applications for these studios as long as there is space available. For complete information call the main office at 828-765-2359.

A $150 studio deposit is due with the application. This amount will be applied to your total balance.
*Note: Glass students do not include a rental deposit, rent is due in full the day of rental. Applicants will be notified by December 19th if their application has been accepted.

The full balance for winter rental is due by December 29, 2008.

Winter rental session dates are Session 1: January 11 - January 31 and Session 2: February 1 - February 21. Glass studio daily rental dates are November 17 - December 19 and January 12 - February 6.

Housing will be available after 4pm on the 1st Sunday of each session. A Studio Safety Tour is required prior to studio access; your Studio Coordinator will let you know the scheduled time for that tour.

Renters who have never worked in Penland's studios must provide three letters of reference with application. References are not necessary for past students and instructors. Studio coordinators must approve all renters.

If housing is requested, a $100 refundable housing deposit must accompany the application. This refund will be mailed to you within three weeks of your departure, pending inspection by the Services Manager.

Studio rental includes access to equipment ONLY. Students are required to pay for their own materials used in the production of work. Glass studio rental includes clear glass in the furnaces, although glass studio rates may vary depending on intended usage. All prospective glass studio renters must contact the studio coordinator. See note below with glass studio rates.

Studio rental does not include technical instruction. Renters must be qualified to work safely and independently in the studio.

People assisting renters need to also be renters themselves and will be required to submit an application and rental fees. The only exception is in hot glass, where the rental rate is for the bench.

Renters will not use equipment or materials in the studio if they have not been fully trained to use the equipment or materials. Use of any studio equipment must be approved by the studio coordinator.

Renters must understand that they will be responsible for replacing any studio equipment that is damaged or destroyed due to their negligence, misuse, or abuse.

Studio renters must agree to participate in studio cleanup managed by the studio coordinator before moving out of the studio.

Renters are not allowed to bring pets to Penland.

Renters are required to read and understand the Penland Student Handbook.

Renters understand that Penland reserves the right to terminate a rental agreement for unsuitable behavior considered harmful to studios, housing, or community life.
