Directions to Penland School
Penland School of Crafts is located near Spruce Pine in Mitchell
County, North Carolina, Northeast of Asheville. We also have
a map to Penland.
Note: If you are unfamiliar with the area, we strongly advise that you arrive before dark; it's easy to get lost. Penland is one hour from Asheville, one hour from Johnson City, three hours from Charlotte, one hour from Marion, three hours from Knoxville.
From Asheville: Take NC 19/23 (future I-26) North past Mars Hill. Take exit #9 towards Burnsville, staying on NC 19. This road will become NC 19E (DO NOT get on 19W). Continue past Burnsville, approximately 10 miles. Turn left at Penland School sign (large BP station on the right) onto Penland Road. Follow Penland Road for 3 miles when you will cross a bridge and railroad tracks. One mile past the railroad tracks, bear left at the big curve. Go all the way up the hill.
From the Piedmont and Eastern North Carolina: Take I-40 west to Marion, Exit #86. Follow Rte. 226 North around Marion, up the mountain, and under the Blue Ridge Parkway. After several miles, you will pass a shopping strip on the right, then crest a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill, turn left at the stoplight onto 226/19E. Drive .7 mile, going through one light. Turn right at the second light, continuing on 226 for 3.6 miles. Turn left onto Penland Road; there's a Penland School sign at the corner (if you pass Boyd's Seafood on the left, you missed the turn). Drive 1.1 miles on Penland Road to a big curve. Turn sharply to the right (there is another Penland School sign here), and go all the way up the hill.
From North Via Rte. 95: Turn onto Rte. 85 at Petersburg, VAto Greensboro, then follow directions from Eastern NC (above).
From North Via I-81: Exit onto I-26 East (near Johnson City, TN). Continue on to Exit #32 (Unicoi Road). At the exit, turn left, then right at stop sign to Unicoi. Go .7 mile, then turn left onto TN 107, which becomes NC 226 when you cross the state line. Follow 226 through Beuladean, through Loafers Glory, until you come to a traffic light. Turn right at the light (this is Bakersville) to stay on 226. Continue on 226 for about 5 miles and turn right onto Penland Road–there is a Penland School sign and a produce stand at this corner. Drive 1.1 miles on Penland Road to a big curve. Turn sharply to the right (there is another Penland School sign here), and go all the way up the hill.
From the Deep South, the Midwest, the Southwest, etc.: Find your way to Asheville, NC and then follow directions listed above.
