About the Penland Wood Studio

Session 1--May 25-June 6

Michael Jean Cooper--Laminating, Shaping, Passion, Results
This class is about woodworking outside the normal rectilinear parameters. We will explore bend lamination in its many variations for pure form and function. Shaping will be fast and furious with a large assortment of air and electric tools. This will be an intensive two-weeks of hands-on learning and visual exploration. For woodworkers and sculptors with woodworking experience. Basic woodworking skills required. Code 01w

Session 2--June 8-20

Ashley Jameson Eriksmoen--Building from the Body
Students will examine and explore proportions and postures taken from the body and apply these ideas to furnituresque objects. Slide lectures, design talks, and woodworking demonstrations will guide students through the design and construction process. By breaking away from standard measurements and archetypal forms, students will create original artworks/furniture designs. Open to all levels, but especially helpful for experienced woodworkers seeking new inspiration. All levels. Code 02w

Studio artist and teacher at California College of the Arts and City College of San Francisco; Norwegian Marshall Fund grant to research traditional Nordic woodcraft; exhibitions: Pritam & Eames (NY), Fuller Museum (MA).

This class is part of the special session titled The Body.

Session 3--June 22-July 4

John Grew Sheridan--Seating & Chair Making
This class is all about seating and chairs—from the practical to the fanciful, for novice to experienced woodworkers. We will begin with an understanding of fitting the human form and then go wherever our sketches and imaginations take us, covering whatever techniques we need along the way, including curved shaping and laminating. This class will emphasize completing projects. All levels. Code 03w

Studio artist and teacher at the Academy of Art (San Francisco); other teaching: Arrowmont (TN), Oregon College of Art and Craft, Haystack (ME), and at his own studio; exhibitions: New Hope Art Center (PA), Crafts National 39 at Penn State University.

Session 4--July 6–18

Richard Prisco--Screw It: Alternative Joinery
This class explores the aesthetic power of exposed connective fasteners. We will combine alternative joinery techniques with metal and traditional furniture methods to create individual pieces. The class will cover design processes, safe machine operation, wood selection, joinery, finishing, and other aspects of furniture making. Curiosity and a will to explore are the only prerequisites. All levels. Code 04w

Professor at Savannah College of Art and Design (GA); work in traveling exhibitions including Inspired by China and American Masterpieces of Southern Craft; trustee of the Furniture Society.

Session 5--July 20–August 5

Daniel Michalik--The Thick Skin: Unlocking the Potential of Cork
This workshop will focus on experimental design using cork. We will unlock the potential of this wonderful, ecological material as it relates to making objects. Cork will be used to achieve structure and visual texture on its own and in combination with wood. We will use woodworking tools and techniques as a starting point for creating hybrid materials, and also explore innovative techniques such as cork casting. Slide shows will explain what the material is, where it comes from, and how it is used traditionally. All levels. Code 05w

Furniture designer focused on overlooked, environmentally responsible materials; teacher at Rhode Island School of Design; exhibitions: Milan Furniture Fair, Gallery NAGA (Boston); work published in Dwell, Wallpaper, American Craft. danielmichalik.com

Session 6--August 10–22

Sabiha Mujtaba--Cultural Influences & Expressions
This class will focus on designing small furniture or objects that express a cultural image. Students will explore their own culture or one they have an empathy with. They are encouraged to bring personal objects, thoughts, and influences that will help develop ideas. Design, drafting, joinery, structure, and carving with hand and power tools will be taught as needed. Discussions and slide shows will provide inspiration. Basic woodshop skills will be helpful, but the class is open to all levels. Code 06w

Studio artist; teaching: Highland Woodworking (Atlanta); Niche award; gallery representation: Grovewood Gallery (NC); exhibits nationally. chrysaliswoodworks.com

Session 7--August 24–30

Roy Underhill--Dovetailed Joiner’s Chest
This midsized tool chest is big enough for the traveling artisan, but not too big to move. Miter-ended through dovetails join the corners, and half-lap corners on the lid frame an offset panel. The joinery will be done entirely with hand tools. Beginners will find this a worthy introduction to hand woodworking, while advanced students may undertake refinements to the interior fittings. All levels. Code 07w

Seventh session will also include sculptor Jim Gallucci's class, for artists working in any media, in proposing and developing public art projects.
