Special Work-study

You are welcome to mention in your letter specific scholarships you qualify for, however, this is not a requirement for application.

Janet Taylor Acosta Memorial Scholarship Fund

Established to honor a woman who deeply appreciated Penland, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a woman who is interested in expanding her abilities in craft.

Milton Baxt Scholarship Fund

Created in honor of Milton Baxt, this endowment fund provides one work-study student for a two week session.

Abby Watkins Bernon Scholarship

Established in memory of Abby Watkins Bernon, who was a student in printmaking and photography, this endowment fund provides a work-study scholarship for a woman who is studying printmaking, photography, books, or drawing with the intention of pursuing a career in one of these fields.

Carey G. Bringle Jr. Scholarship Fund

Established by friends and family in memory of Carey G. Bringle Jr., this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a student in wood who will have a work-study assignment in the wood studio.

The Collins, Evans, Massey Scholarship Fund

Established in honor of Mr. and Mrs. T. Clyde Collins, Jr., Lisbeth C. Evans, and William P. Massey, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship.

Eastern North Carolina Scholarship Fund

Established by Lisa and Dudley Anderson and eastern North Carolina friends of Penland, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a North Carolina student living east of Raleigh.

Grovewood Gallery Scholarship Fund

Established by the Grovewood Gallery of Asheville in honor of longtime friend of Penland Doug Sigler, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship to a student with woodworking experience who will have a work assignment in the wood studio.

LeBlanc Scholarship Fund

Established by Steve and Ellen LeBlanc, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a two week session.

John and Ione Lee Scholarship Fund

Established by John and Ione Lee, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a two week summer session in wood.

Lucy C. Morgan Scholarship Fund

Established in honor of Penland's founder, this endowment fund provides work-study scholarships for people of color, people with disabilities, and veterans.

David and Pat Nevin Scholarship Fund

Established by work-study veteran Pat Nevin in memory of her late husband David, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship so that a student can have the same kind of experience at Penland that Pat has.

Pat Nevin Scholarship Award

To encourage older students to take risks with new media, Pat Nevin funds this award annually in support of a special work-study scholarship for a person 60 years or older without significant experience in the medium they choose to study.

Betty Oliver Scholarship Fund

Established by the friends and family of Betty Oliver, an instructor who loved Penland, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship to a student who will use the time at Penland to explore a career or life transition.

Michael Pierschalla Scholarship Fund

Established in memory of wood instructor Michael Pierschalla, in recognition of his fondness for and commitment to Penland, which he thought of as both a spiritual and educational center, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship in wood.

Tommie Rush and Richard Jolley Scholarship Fund

Established by Ron and Lisa Brill and the Brill family in honor of glass artists Tommie Rush and Richard Jolley, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a two-week summer session in glass.

The School Teachers Scholarship Fund

Established by friends and family in memory of Dorothy Heyman, who was a weaver, a longtime student, and friend of the school, this endowment fund provides one work-study scholarship for a teacher. No images required.

Norm and Gloria Schulman Scholarship Fund
