Session 1--May 25-June 6
Bryan Baker--Typesetting Stunts & Daring Patterns
Combining text and image, students will construct complex, type-high compositions with movements that run counter to the natural grid that forms the root of typesetting. However, no type will be harmed; proper and careful techniques will be taught. We will investigate matters of position, poise, and proximity with both language and non-text elements. This class will require extreme patience and strong attention to detail. All levels, but previous experience with relief and letterpress printing will be helpful. Session 2--June 8-20
Jessica H. Meyer--Tattoo You: Lithography on Skin
This workshop will explore the sexy, rock ‘n’ roll side of lithography you never knew existed. Whether you are new to lithography or an old stone worshiper, you will learn to make skin-transferable prints that can turn you into the tattooed god or goddess you’ve always dreamed of becoming, but your mother begged you not to be. We will generate imagery by drawing on plates or stones and print with inks designed for skin transfer. All levels. Session 3--June 22-July 4
John Risseeuw--Word & Image
Combining letterpress with collage, relief, and collagraph printmaking, we will create prints and broadsides using both words and images. This workshop will teach the basics of typesetting and printing and will also examine methods of image production including textures and found objects that can add layers of meaning to the texts. Some experience with letterpress and/or printmaking will be helpful but is not required. All levels. Jennifer Angus--Screen-Printed Wallpaper
This class is an introduction to large-format screen printing for wallpaper. We will cover repeat systems and developing a “seamless” repeat. Students will design patterns and use photo emulsion to transfer their designs to the screen to create one-of-a-kind wallpaper. We will experiment with painted grounds and hand-painted accents. We will print on a variety of papers that can also be used for wrapping paper and large-scale installations. All levels. This class takes place in the second-floor textiles studio. Flo Hatcher--Stone Lithography, Relief, & Intaglio
“Great lithography has to do with the stoneness of stone,” said artist Robert Motherwell. Lithography, a chemical process invented in 1798 by Alois Senfelder, involves the unique experience of mark making directly on Bavarian limestone slabs. We will cover this process in depth, and students may also explore relief and intaglio printing using multiple plate surfaces and tools to expand their print imagery. Students will be encouraged to experiment with various processes in a healthy, nontoxic environment. All levels are welcome in this collaborative workshop environment. Session 5--July 20August 5
Robert Mueller--A Sense of Place
This class will focus on the collagraphic printmaking process. Printing plates are made using collaged materials: paper, glue, gesso, etc. The plate is wiped and/or rolled with ink which is transferred to paper on the press. We will explore visual interpretations of the five senses using representational and nonrepresentational approaches to image making. Your final prints will describe an all-encompassing sense of your experience at Penland. Collaboration encouraged. All levels. Paul Moxon--Letterpress: Practicum & Play
This class is ideal for artists and writers who want to add the craft of printing to their creative arsenal. We will begin with the fundamentals of hand typesetting and presswork, then experiment with relief image-making processes and painterly inking techniques. Students will develop a series of individual projects and should come to class with brief texts and ready to generate ideas for images. All levels. Session 7--August 2430
Robin Price--Chance Operations & Fine Printing
Like John Cage, we will have a briefcase full of chance operations to relinquish control of our likes, dislikes, and habits in the creative process, while simultaneously learning to gain control on the press. Finesse in metal type composition and letterpress printing will be covered in depth. Imaging techniques include monoprinting, collage with dry-mount film, pochoir, paper manipulation, and using pre-printed sheets as palimpsets. Simple book structures will also be included. We will often work as an ensemble and periodically put ourselves in unexpected positions. All levels.
