About the Penland Iron Studio
Session 1--May 25-June 6
Phillip Baldwin--Basic Steel Smithing
This class will cover the basic techniques of hot and cold forging with an emphasis on hot mild steel. Topics include body mechanics, material science, tools, and fire with a strong emphasis on design and drawing as integral parts of the making process. Teaching will be highly structured to facilitate adequate coverage of a broad topic. Our goal is to compress ten years’ worth of learning the basics into two weeks. The class will be useful to beginning and intermediate smiths. All levels. Code 01iStudio artist making work ranging from tools to architectural metalwork; teaching: University of Washington, Haystack (ME), Peters Valley (NJ), SummerVail (CO), Penland, and others.
Session 2--June 8-20
Hoss Haley--The Fall of Icarus
Ever since the fall of Icarus, technology has been spawning unintended consequences. This class will explore the relationship of body and machine by making human-powered moving sculptures. We will begin with basic physics and simple mechanisms: levers, pulleys, wheels, cams. After some preliminary assignments, each student will develop a design for a sculpture. In the mornings we will bring ideas, drawings, and models to the table and brainstorm as a group. Afternoons, we will test ideas and work. Embracing low technology, we will use simple forging, welding, drilling, and cutting to create sophisticated movements. All levels. Code 02iStudio artist; commissions: Charlotte Area Transit System (NC), Mecklenburg County (NC), Asheville’s Pack Square Conservancy (NC). hosshaley.com
This class is part of the special session titled The Body.
Session 3--June 22-July 4
Maria Cristalli--Small Garden Gates
In this class you will start with your imagination and add tools and techniques to build a small garden gate. We will explore traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon and riveting along with modern techniques such as welding, all with an emphasis on good craftsmanship. All levels, but some blacksmithing experience will be helpful. Code 03iStudio artist producing custom architectural and sculptural ironwork; demonstrator for Northwest Blacksmith Association and California Blacksmith Association; exhibitions include National Ornamental Metals Museum (TN); featured on HGTV’s Modern Masters. mariacristalli.com
Session 4--July 6-18
Joe Anderson--Forging for the Kitchen
Designing and producing tools is an excellent way to understand how form follows function. We reach for what is most beautiful; we use what is most functional. We will learn, expand, and polish our skills using kitchen utensils as the focus for ideas. Possibilities include spoons, ladles, forks, spatulas, corkscrews, bottle openers, frying pans. The combination of function and aesthetics will keep us very busy. All levels. Code 04iStudio artist making functional objects and sculpture; lectured, taught, and demonstrated at national and regional blacksmithing conferences since 1980. josephandersonsculpture.com
Session 5--July 20-August 5
James Viste--A Worthy Vessel
This class is about manipulating ferrous materials through forging and fabrication to create functional/sculptural vessels. Techniques will include relief-die making and use, sheet and plate forming, and re-forming of manufactured materials (angle, channel, and tubing). The observation and influence of other craft materials (clay, wood, fabric, leather, etc.) will be emphasized. All levels. Code 05iManager of EdgeWise Forge (Detroit) and craft technician at College for Creative Studies (Detroit); work exhibited in a variety of forums.
Session 6--August 10-22
Mark Aspery--Leafwork & Related Tooling
This class will focus initially on classical leaf forms such as forged acanthus and water leaves. We will make tooling to support each technique. Students will then apply these skills and tools to more contemporary applications. Free form organic sculptures are also encouraged. We will cover stake repoussé, forge welding, hammer building, heat treatment, and blacksmithing skills. All levels. Code 06iStudio artist, owner/operator of the Mark Aspery School of Blacksmithing (CA); author of The Skills of a Blacksmith: Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing. markaspery.net
Session 7--August 24-30
The iron studio will be used this session for sculptor Jim Gallucci's class, for artists working in any media, in proposing and developing public art projects.
