We're delighted that you have decided to take a class at Penland. Here is information that you may find helpful.


You will receive a copy of this handbook in the mail and it is available here at any time.


This is information about ground transportation if you are flying.


This is the information you need if you are driving.


This is an extensive list of area motels, B&Bs, and rental houses, which will be useful if you prefer to stay off campus or you will be having guests while you are at Penland.

Cancellation and Refund Policy for Summer workshops and Spring/Fall One-Week workshops

If you cancel any time up to thirty days before the beginning of a class, you will receive a full refund minus a $100 cancellation fee and the $50 nonrefundable processing fee. If you cancel later than thirty days before the beginning of the class, there is no refund. This policy also applies to work-study scholarship students. If it is necessary for Penland to cancel a class, students will be notified and offered another class or a full refund. We cannot be responsible for nonrefundable airline tickets.

Cancellation & Refund Policy for Spring/Fall Eight-Week workshops

If you cancel forty-five days or more before the beginning of a class, you will receive a refund minus a $250 cancellation fee. If you cancel later than forty-five days before the beginning of the class, there is no refund. This policy also applies to work-study scholarship students. If it is necessary for Penland to cancel a class, students will be notified and offered another class or a full refund. We cannot be responsible for nonrefundable airline tickets.

College Credit Information

Penland students can receive college credit through Western Carolina University (WCU) through the procedure outlined below.

Fees: $125 per undergraduate credit, $150 per graduate credit, $50 application fee. (These fees are set by the university and are subject to change without notice.) Note: Effective July 1st, 2013, the application fee will be $55.

Credit Hours: 2 credits for 1 week of study; 3 for 2 or 2 and a half weeks; 9 credits for 8 weeks.

Contact Hours: Students must have at least 15 contact hours per credit hour earned.

Before you arrive at Penland:

Check with your degree program to be sure that credit you obtain from WCU will transfer.
Bring your Social Security number and college address.

Bring check or credit card. If applying for graduate credit, you should apply to WCU online as a graduate transfer student not obtaining a degree from Western at


After you arrive at Penland:

Tell your instructor that you are taking the class for college credit.
Register for college credit at the Pines on the first Tuesday of the session at 4:00 pm.
Bring Social Security number and college address.
Full payment is due at this time by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card or American Express. No refunds.
