This set of nesting boxes was made by all the students in the second-session box-making class taught by Jody Williams. They donated the set to the scholarship auction. (This is an animation so if it’s not cycling, please wait a few seconds for it to start). Photos by Robin Dreyer
We like to think of Penland as a family-friendly place all year ’round, but during second session this summer, we were treated to an unusually large number of families co-teaching workshops.
In the hot glass studio, brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre brought a shared Liberal Bias to the combination of mixed media and blown glass.
In upper textiles, Charllote Kwon and her daughter Sophena (pictured here with student Rachael Goolsby) shared their multi-generational approach to Natural Dyes.
And in the lower clay studio, identical twin brothers Kyle and Kelly Phelps upped the ante on togetherness, arriving in identical cars and dressing identically every day as they showed their students the ins and outs of Figure Narrative: Clay as Process.
Opening tomorrow at the Toe River Arts Council Gallery in Burnsville, NC, with a reception from 5 – 7pm, wood sculptor, classical philologist, and frequent Penland student John Moore’s “Sensual Geometry” showcases his figurative sculptures, some of which we suspect may have been made here at Penland.
