"When I am arranging the colors, and viewing the pieces to see how they work together, I feel like I am painting with fabric."

Carol Gorelick of Charlotte, NC and her husband Shelton, are avid collectors of craft, particularly ceramics. They are actively involved with Penland and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design. Carolís studio is filled with layers of folded fabric sorted by the color wheel. One wall, covered with felt, serves as the design wall where pieces of cut fabric are arranged and rearranged as compositions evolve. Patterns in the fabric are carefully chosen for their place in the quilt. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Carol studied art history at Ohio State University. She started sewing in junior high school and began quilting in the 1970s. She makes her work exclusively for family and friends and it is not generally available for sale. She gives this piece to honor her love of Penland.
