Jane Kessler Memorial Archives
The Jane Kessler Memorial Archives at Penland contains unique materials that document the history of the school. The collections spans from 1920 to the present and the materials capture many stories: how Penland came to be, how itís changed over the years, and how the place, people and programs continue to evolve. We collect and preserve a variety of things: documents, including administrative records, publications, maps, and architectural drawings; audio-visual materials, including photographs, oral histories, and videotapes; and objects made at Penland that are illustrative of the educational philosophy of the school or made in conjunction with special events on campus.
Instructors are welcome to arrange for class visits and individuals interested in pursuing research are encouraged to contact the schoolís archivist. The archives is staffed 30 hours a week and is open to the public, but an appointment is highly recommended to ensure that the archivist is available. General inquiries can also be made by post, email, and telephone.
