Penland Photo of the "Week"

February 5, 2007

This is Jim Croft, who has spent many years mastering the techniques of medieval book binding. He is shown here with a large, wooden-covered book he made in the Penland book studio this winter. Jim co-taught the fall Concentration class in books. When the session ended, he and his wife Melody decided to stay for a while and work in the book studio. He made this book as a gift to the school using his own handmade paper (also made at Penland), oak boards that were given to him by Penland instructor Dan Essig, and a special piece of linen canvas woven for the project by Penland neighbor Edwina Bringle. Jim's intention is for the book to become an ongoing community journal, so it will live in the reading room next to the coffee house, and everyone will be invited to write in it.
