Annually Funded Scholarships at Penland School of Crafts

Suzanne and Walter Allen Scholarship Award
Suzanne and Walter Allen fund this award to provide one full scholarship for a two-week course to a student from the Memphis College of Art. A MCA faculty committee makes the selection. Eligible students are current sophomores, juniors, and seniors graduating in December within all majors.

 

Lynn Kerr Azzam Memorial Scholarship
Elizabeth Aralia funds this award annually in memory of her sister, to provide a full scholarship for a summer class to a woman 50 years or older.

 

Benisch – Allen Scholarship Award
Barbara Benisch and Jacque Allen fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session to a student in any media with financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Birkhill Glass Scholarship Award
The Birkhill Family Foundation funds this award to provide one full scholarship for a summer workshop in glass to a student with financial need and great artistic potential.

 

Mary Anna Box & Melvin Sidney Stanforth Scholarship Award
This two week work-study scholarship, funded annually by a friend to honor Mary Anna Box & Melvin Sidney Stanforth, is awarded based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Elizabeth Brim Scholarship Award
Funded annually by Kent Leslie in honor of Elizabeth Brim, this award provides one full scholarship in any medium, for a woman over forty for whom two weeks at Penland might change her life.

 

Crimson Laurel Gallery Scholarship Award
Crimson Laurel Gallery funds this award in honor of David Little to provide one full scholarship for a summer session for an emerging artist from Mitchell County. Eligible applicants are aged 18-25 at the time of application, are a graduate of Mitchell High School or a permanent Mitchell County Resident, and must demonstrate interest in studying art to become a professional artist. High School seniors are encouraged to apply.

 

Bob & Peggy Culbertson Scholarship Award
Peggy and Bob Culbertson fund this award annually to provide a full scholarship for a two-week summer session based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Dana Foundation Glass Scholarships Award
Funded by The Charles A. Dana Foundation at the recommendation of Helene Safire, this award provides full scholarships for a summer session in glass.

 

Isaac & Sonia Luski Scholarship Award
Long-time friends of Penland Isaac and Sonia Luski fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

The McMurray Scholarship Award
Charles McMurray funds this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session.

 

Ron and Sue Meier Scholarship Award
Ron and Sue Meier fund this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a summer session in wood.

 

Mitchell High School Scholarship Award
Penland School of Crafts funds this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a summer session for a graduating senior from Mitchell High School. Work-study duties for this award are assigned in the recipient’s studio.

 

The Patricia Nevin Scholarship Award
To encourage older students to take risks with new media, Pat Nevin funds this award annually in support of a special work-study scholarship for a person 60 years or older without significant experience in the medium they choose to study.

 

Edith S. Peiser Scholarship Award
Edith Peiser funds this award to provide one work-study scholarship for a summer session in any media for a student with financial need.

 

Marcia and Seymour Sabesin Scholarship Award
Marcia and Seymour Sabesin fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a summer session to a student at the University of Arizona-Tucson.

Funded annually by her daughter, the Joan Sweiger Toth Scholarship honors an artistic mom and provides one work-study scholarship for a two week summer class based on financial need and exceptional talent.

 

Rob Williams and Warren Womble Scholarship Award
Rob Williams and Warren Womble fund this award annually to provide one full scholarship for a two-week summer session in printmaking for a student with exceptional talent and financial need.
